It was not that long ago that we thought that our natural resources were inexhaustible and would last forever, without taking any responsibility for "maintenance." As late as the early 1960's, the Chesapeake Bay, and the entire watershed for that matter, appeared to be in relatively good health. Crabs and fish were plentiful, the water was clear and clean, and swimming in our creeks and rivers was not a health concern.

Soon after, however, it became apparent that we, as recreational and corporate consumers of our natural resources, had initiated practices that were having a negative impact, and that these trends were out of control and irreversible.

Target Concepts, through the use of the Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company™ brand, has joined forces with all of those who now believe that we can reverse the damage caused by years of abuse and neglect and return to a symbiotic relationship with our land, air and water. The Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company™ takes pride in building relationships with non-profit agencies and organizations whose efforts are leading the way toward building sustainable communities and restoring our precious watershed.

The Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company™ (CBRC) shows their support by providing free catered coffee services for specific events involving watershed restoration organizations. This is an invaluable opportunity for CBRC to stay involved and keep up with current events concerning our watershed. CBRC uses this exposure to gain educational insight, build relationships, distribute literature, raise public awareness and explain our position and company dynamics.

The Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company™ is also proud to donate a percentage of the sales of their products and merchandise to organizations making measurable change with restoration efforts. We will continue to develop coffees that educate our consumers about great coffee and our watershed.

The Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company™ is dedicated to raising public awareness through labeling, packaging and marketing efforts. We use each of our printing mediums as a tool to promote not only the brand but also what the brand has become synonymous with: "watershed restoration and education."

As time goes on, you will see our package label information change as consumer networks are established. We will use this community of networks as an information channel that will deliver information through the purchase of our coffees.

Additional approaches to educate through coffee include continuously updating our food service establishments with new merchandise and POS items that inform customers about current issues, studies, and findings by the organizations we work with in the restoration community. We will constantly look for new ways to build public awareness and promote education about the importance of living "Sustainable" lifestyles and preserving our natural resources through restoration efforts.

While researching production equipment, we stumbled across an entirely different type of roaster that underscores the very fabric of our business practices. This roaster, the Sirocco SR35, developed by Jay Endres of Roastery Development Group in Redwood City, CA, is a totally modern design that leverages 21st century technology to offer an enormous amount of benefits to both the Roastmaster and the environment.

The design of this roaster takes the very best of tested roasting technologies and puts them to use while taking a unique approach in the temperature control and after burning methodologies. This roaster has roughly a 73% reduction in the emissions of a drum/afterburner and an 82% reduction of a fluid-bed/afterburner! These statistics are based on a study called "Innovative Eco-Roasting Pollution Control Systems" conducted by Mark Inman of Taylor Maid Farms, Sebastopol, CA. As impressive as these numbers ar,e there are even more benefits to mention.

The Sirocco SR35 co-generates its own energy by recycling the chaff that separates from the bean during the first crack of the roasting process and burns it off as fuel. Here are some additional tidbits of information about this revolutionary roaster:

  • Compared to a 35K drum roaster outfitted with an afterburner, over the course of 1 year the Sirocco will deliver savings of over $8423 in fuel costs.
  • Compared to a comparable Fluid-Bed roaster with an afterburner the Sirocco will deliver an annual savings of over $13,945 in fuel costs.
  • Annual use of the Sirocco will also keep an average of 403,484 lbs of C02 and 1,765,112 lbs of Nitrogen from being released into the atmosphere.

In general, it means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable coffee is coffee that is grown in a manner that is kind to the environment and its people.

A sustainable farm will take part in shade growing and organic farming. The farm should place much emphasis on giving back to the land as it does to its people. Sustainable farms will find alternative energy sources such as using coffee husks as heating fuel versus cutting down additional trees and vegetation. They will make every attempt to conserve water and minimize pollution. Most importantly, is that the farmers replace what they take away from their land by replanting trees and replacing essential nutrients to the soil they unearth.
